Additional Advice

Knees and Toes: Exmoor has some steep climbs, so poles do help the knees on the descent, so worth considering if you have knee pain. There are collapsible poles available, so they can be stored in your rucksack when not required. Plus, it’s worth keeping your toe nails cut short to avoid painful toes.

Avoid a Fall:

Think before you step. Slipping over can be easily done, hopefully just an embarrassing incident, but it can be painful and even worse, so here are a few tips of what to look out for and put into practise.

  • Loose rocks and rocks under leave – look out for them and avoid

  • Bramble – Brambles across a path can cause trip hazards

  • Wet Rocks – There will be streams to cross and wet rocks may be very slippery, take smaller steps in hazard areas, it will give you more stability

  • Uneven and sloping ground, especially when wet
