The Exmoor Challenge

A Guided Hiking Event – Fri. 8th to Sun. 11th October 2026

A 3-day challenging hiking weekend based at the Yarn Market Hotel, Dunster.

Just finished one challenge or want a new one? Exmoor has your next one !

Ever trained or in training for a marathon, completed a hiking challenge or pushed yourself for a cause, this October challenge could be for you.

This group guided hiking challenge is not a race, it’s not about winning, it’s not about speed, but it is about endurance, it is about encouraging others and it is about the willingness to push and succeed.

As a group we’ll work together, make new friends, share new experiences and encourage success.

Along the way we’ll experience nature, see beautiful scenery, learn about wildlife, feel the freedom of being outdoors and free the mind, as exercise releases those endorphins that boost our well-being.

The event starts on Thursday evening, gathering at the hotel for an evening meal and briefing.

Friday, we travel to Minehead to begin from the official ‘South West Coast Path’ start point, walking the coastal path for 5 miles, before looping back over Selworthy Beacon, down to Tivington and over the ridge to Grabbist Hill and finally back down to Dunster. A 17 mile walk and 1,200-meter total ascent, taking around 8 hours to complete.

Saturday, we change the scenery for Moorland and open space. We start at Alderman’s Barrow, the official Exmoor Dark Sky site and the first in Europe.

Traveling across open Moorland down to the village of Oare and famous Robbers Bridge, ascending up to Hawkcombe and a chance to see Exmoor ponies.  From here we’ll have sight of Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor at 519 meters, our next destination. From Dunkery we descend back down to Alderman’s Barrow to complete the days walk. A 17.7 mile walk and 810-meter total ascent.

Sunday, the final day. This is a half day walk of just under 10 miles, walking the stunning Exe Valley from Exford down towards Winsford, before looping back up the valley to Exford.  A 10 mile walk and 610-meter total ascent. Allowing time for you to travel home, or relax for the afternoon should you wish to stay an additional night.

Maybe consider setting up a fundraising page for a charitable cause to help spur you on!
