Tornado Steam Train
returns to Minehead
Monday 12th to Friday 16th July 2010
and
Monday 13th to Friday 17th September 2010
There are plenty of steam engines in Britain, but none like this.
The Tornado steam train is a 4-6-2 Pacific mainline express locomotive. It is unique: the first full-size, standard-gauge steam locomotive to have been built in this country since 1960, when Evening Star rolled out of the Swindon works.
For 14 years a group of enthusiasts and professional engineers in Darlington, the birthplace of steam railway locomotion, have been hammering, turning, milling and brazing their way into the history books by creating from scratch the only example of an extinct breed of locomotives, the LNER A1 Peppercorns, all of which were exterminated in the great cull after British Rail's switch from steam in the Sixties
The Tornado will be running on the West Somerset Railway .
