Exmoor Red Deer Rutting Weekend

October sees the start of the rutting season for Red Deer. The rut is a period when the biggest and strongest male rounds up the females for mating. The stag shows his superiority over other stags by constantly bellowing an echoing roar. Sometimes other stags will approach the females and this occasionally causes fights to break out which causes serious clashing of their magnificent antlers.

Red Deer are our largest native land animals and can weigh up to 190kg.

It is a magical experience watching and listening to the wild deer as the stars fade and the sun rises over Exmoor, and again as the sun sets in the evening.
